Hydrolyzed type I collagen

With age, changes in metabolic processes of structural components of the skin lead to visible signs of aging, such as increased dryness and wrinkles [ 4 ] . A+ Skin Complete contains hydrolyzed type I collagen from fish. Type I is the most common form of collagen in the body and the one that is primarily found in large quantities in skin, hair and nails.

The skin consists of a whopping 70 percent of collagen

Collagen is a complex structural protein [ 6 ] which makes up about 25–35% of all protein in the body [ 7 ] . Collagen type I is the most commonly occurring form in the body, approx. 90% of collagen is made up of this type. Type I collagen is mainly found in large quantities in the skin, hair and nails, but also to some extent in bones, teeth, tendons and ligaments [ 8 ] . The skin consists of a whopping 70 percent of collagen.

Decomposition process starts already at the age of 25

The collagen content and the body's collagen production are important for the skin to remain elastic, resilient and healthy [ 9 , 10 ] . As we age, the body's production of collagen decreases. This breakdown process starts already at the age of 25 and the amount of collagen decreases by about one percent every year thereafter. By the time you turn 60, collagen levels may have decreased by 50%.

Studies show collagen's positive effect on skin elasticity

Taking collagen in the form of dietary supplements has been shown in various scientific and published studies to have a positive effect on the skin's elasticity and moisture [ 2 , 3 , 4 ] . One of these studies also showed a reduction in signs of aging such as wrinkles [ 4 ] . Taking dietary supplements with hyaluronic acid has shown a link to both the reduction of wrinkles and better skin elasticity [ 1 ] . Another 12-week study of more than 1,000 adults found that a daily collagen supplement improved the amount of this protein in the skin and reduced signs of skin aging [ 4 ] .

Hyaluronic acid binds water

A+ Skin Complete contains hyaluronic acid which is a substance found naturally in the skin and which plays a certain role in cell growth of the skin. However, its main function is that it has so-called viscoelastic properties, which means that it can attract and retain water. Hyaluronic acid can bind water up to a thousand times its own volume. Not so surprising then, perhaps, that taking food supplements with hyaluronic acid has been shown to produce fewer wrinkles and increased skin elasticity [ 1 ] .

Silicon that interacts with collagen

A+ Skin Complete also contains silicon from bamboo extract and pomegranate. Collagen is dependent on silicon, amino acids and vitamin C. All healthy elastic body tissue is also rich in silicon. Bamboo extract is rich in silicon. Pomegranate is one of the fruits that contains absolutely the most antioxidants, which help protect cells from damage caused by free radicals.

A combination of zinc, riboflavin, biotin and vitamin C

A+ Skin Complete also contains the antioxidants zinc and vitamin C, which can protect the skin against damage from free radicals [ 5 ] . Zinc , riboflavin (vitamin B2) and biotin (vitamin B7) all contribute to maintaining normal and healthy skin [ 5 ] . Vitamin C is a normal and important part of the skin and an antioxidant that protects against oxidative stress. Vitamin C also contributes to the normal formation of collagen [5] .
