Why is magnesium important?
Magnesium is a mineral that is crucial for several of the body's functions. Among other things, it helps to keep track of blood pressure, keep the skeleton strong, maintain normal muscle function and ensure that the heart beats properly.
Foods that contain magnesium
It is good to try to get your magnesium through your diet. This means that you also get other important antioxidants, minerals and vitamins that are combined with each other in a natural way. Magnesium is found naturally in leafy vegetables, legumes, meat, shellfish, fish and whole grain products. And drink lots of water! Even drinking water contains a lot of magnesium.
Symptoms of magnesium deficiency
Magnesium deficiency is uncommon in healthy people. But it is not so simple to measure the level of magnesium in the body. Only 2% of the magnesium is found in the blood. The rest is found in other tissue, such as in the bone structure. But if you suspect a magnesium deficiency, for example, these are the symptoms you should keep an eye on:
- Cramping muscles
- Mental fatigue or feelings of depression
- Higher heart rate than usual
